What with the kids’ menus?

One thing that I am sometimes guilty of is not having enough time or being too exhausted to cook every single meal and snack for my 2-year-old toddler, Kai.

Unfortunately, this means we sometimes don’t feed him the healthiest food. I’m sure many parents can relate, and like us, they probably feel guilty pangs taking their little ones to eat out.

I certainly do because I don’t have control over what’s in front of my child’s plate. There’s probably a large amount of sugar, salt, fat and preservatives!

I mean, I am not one of those parents that never give treats to my child because I do. I sometimes give Kai lollipops and chocolate because I believe those types of food create fond memories between a child and their parent. Memories of my parents giving us fizzy sugar drinks and ice cream from old trucks were the best! Why should I deprive Kai completely of these good times?

BUT in saying that, what’s up with the kid’s menu?

Every time we eat out, the kid’s menu is almost identical everywhere we go, and it’s far from being healthy! Fish and chips, chicken nuggets, nachos, burger and chips, and spaghetti bolognese.

Surely eateries can incorporate creative, healthy and nutritious kids’ meals with hidden veggies? I for one, would be happy to pay a little extra to make sure Kai was eating food that was good for him.

Would I eat these waffles?

Healthy Waffles For Baby

My honest answer would be yes, especially if I’m trying to eat healthily and count my calories! They make a nutritious on the go snack. These waffles also freeze well, so I can pull them out anytime for Kai and myself for a healthy snack.

If I am feeling a little naughty, I may add some choc chips to the batter. I sometimes have them with more maple syrup and dust them with some icing sugar before serving. Even with these cheeky ingredients added, I still don’t feel guilty eating them because it still feels like I’m eating well. I just have to make sure that Kai’s not around when I eat them this way, as these waffles may never be the same for him!

I’ve made these waffles for Kai since he was 8 months old, with no added sugar, and he always enjoyed them. The only time he doesn’t eat these waffles is when I make them with bananas that are not overripe because they’re not sweet enough to interest him.

When Kai was over 12 months old, I would add a tablespoon of maple syrup to the batter if I had no overripe bananas. This did the trick!

Ingredients for Healthy Waffles For Baby

ingredients

Rolled oats (Old-fashioned oats) – Husked oat groats that are steamed and flattened. They’re lightly processed and highly nutritious.

Bananas are the key ingredients that add sweetness to these waffles, so it’s best to use overripe bananas for better-tasting waffles.

Maple syrup – Our baby’s nurse advised us not to feed Kai any sweeteners (even natural sweeteners) before 12 months, including maple syrup. Kai was happily eating these waffles when he was 8 months old, with no sweeteners. If you do use maple syrup, use pure maple syrup.

How to make Healthy Waffles For Baby

Step-by-step guide with photos

Preheat the waffle maker to 200°C (390°F). Place all the ingredients in the blender except the melted butter. It is best to place the oats near the blades so it’s first to be processed. Blitz until you can no longer see any rolled oats. You may need to scrape the sides of the blender and process it again. The batter should be slightly thick.

Once the waffle maker comes to temperature, brush the grill plates with melted butter to prevent the waffles from sticking. Pour 1/4 cup of batter for each waffle and cook for 5 minutes or until cooked through. Repeat the same steps with the remaining batter.

Leftovers – Allow the waffles to cool completely at room temperature. Transfer the waffles into an airtight container and refrigerate. It’ll be good for up to 3 days. Frozen waffles will keep for up to 2 months.
