This pretty and playful Passionfruit Cocktail isn’t as innocent as it looks! Passionfruit & orange liqueurs, rum, ginger, lemon & lime

Pretty in pink

My husband, Tomi, gave me a strange look when I handed him a pretty glass of this pink Passionfruit cocktail. ‘Shouldn’t you be drinking this with your friends?’ He said, peering into the glass. ‘Give it to Nara’

Little did he know, Nara, my sister, was still sprawled in her bed. Passed out from a house party she attended on New Year’s Eve. Nope, she’s not a teenager, or even in her twenties, but she sure acts like she is. Nara failed to come home and ended up crashing at a friend’s place.

Being the responsible big sister that I am, I couldn’t wait to ‘dob’ her in. Much to Nara’s annoyance, as soon as we saw our parents, I told on her like a gleeful 5-year-old. My parents gave her a little grief, but they saw the humorous side to it.

‘Just drink it! You’re at home, so no one’s going to judge you for drinking a pretty pink cocktail!‘ I teased Tomi. ‘Fine.’ I took the drink off him. ‘You’re on driving duties with Kai (our toddler) today because I’ll have to drink it’.

As expected, he quickly took the bait and drank it. ‘This is pretty darn good. It’s actually nice.’ He said, looking very surprised. ‘It’s got some grunt and balls. Not as weak as I thought!’

My husband, the ever so eloquent food and drink critic.

A simple but satisfying mix

Passionfruit Cocktail

We have quite a collection of alcohol, from spirits to liqueurs thanks to taking advantage of duty-free shopping. I was doing an inventory check a couple of months ago when I realised we had three bottles of passionfruit-based liqueurs we hadn’t even opened!

One of them was ‘Alize Gold Passion’, a French mix of passionfruit and cognac. Studying the pretty bottle, I discovered it was past its use-by date. My heart dropped. What a waste! We also had two large bottles of Passoa passionfruit liqueurs.

So, Passionfruit cocktails it was!

These Passionfruit Cocktails are summery with a beautiful complexity to them. The white rum and orange liqueur complement the passionfruit beautifully. I also muddled some fresh ginger, lemon and lime to deepen the flavours. I couldn’t be happier with the results! A real winner and such a delightful cocktail to sip on!

How to make Passionfruit Cocktail

Step-by-step guide with photos

Place the lemon, lime, ginger, rum, passionfruit & orange liqueurs into a cocktail shaker or glass. Use a muddler or a wooden spoon to muddle the fruits and ginger together. Extract as much juice as you can from the fruits and ginger.

Add in some ice, cover the shaker and give the cocktail a good shake until it’s icy cold.

Strain the cocktail evenly in 2 cold wine glasses, then top them with lemonade.
