These Hennessy Cocktails look elegant, but they’re actually a little flirty & tropical. Hennessy, Orange liqueur, pineapple, lime & raspberry
Two smashed bottles
A few weeks ago, my sister Nara came home from a bar and told us about the amazing Hennessy Cocktails she had with her friends and suggested I recreate them for this blog. Hennessy has a soft spot in my heart, so I went with her suggestion.
After putting my toddler Kai to bed, I was ready to recreate this cocktail my sister was raving about. Nara gave me the list of the ingredients, but I had to guess the quantities and balance the flavour of the cocktail.
I went to grab the bottles that I needed from our cabinet, which is filled with duty-free bottles of alcohol from our previous travels. For some reason, I got distracted and started cleaning around the shelves and moved the bottles forward. To my disbelief, the shelf tipped forward and several glass bottles fell against me and then onto my hard-tiled floor.
Two bottles broke and glass shattered everywhere, but the other 4 bottles survived. Miraculously, I was fine with only minor bruising and cuts on top of my left foot. What I’m most thankful for is that Kai and my kitties (Caviar and Teddie) weren’t near me when this incident happened.
So, unexpectedly, these Hennessy Cocktails cost me more than I bargained for. We lost 2 full bottles of good tequila and rum that night. Well, the good thing is I still had Hennessy and Cointreau bottles, so it was possible to make these cocktails.
It took me 3 goes until Nara, Tomi (husband) and I were happy with the mix.
These cocktails have pineapple juice for tropical and sweet flavours. The lime and raspberry add a beautiful balance of tartness, and then it’s hit with a decent amount of Hennessy (French Cognac) and Cointreau (orange liqueur). A very elegant but fun cocktail.
Hennessy, Tupac and gangsters
Do you ever look back at your younger years and blush at some of the stupid stuff you got up to? I do this often and I would shake my head in embarrassment and laugh.
When Nara and I were young teenagers, we were OBSESSED with Tupac. We loved his songs and knew most of his rap lyrics and we watched his movies on repeat. Tupac’s music and movies introduced us to Hennessy because that’s what cool gangstas drank.
Loving Tupac wasn’t the embarrassing part because some of me still love Tupac. However, our fashion choices at the time were horrible.
Wearing black Adidas clothes with white stripes at our high school meant we were cool and ‘total badasses‘. To take it one step further and get more gangsta, we also wore bandanas! Haha, OMG,…what in the world we were thinking? We were such a fashion disaster!
It took an after-school hangout at McDonald’s to knock some sense into me. I was totally oblivious to how I made others feel just by how I dressed. One of my friends grabbed my arm and whispered, ‘That elderly couple is staring at you.’ When I looked over, the lady pressed their lips uncomfortably and then smiled at me.
I couldn’t believe it, people were frightened of me! Trust me, people, I’m not a danger to society. That moment made me realise that dressing like a gangsta isn’t so cool if it scares random old people.

Ingredients for Hennessy Cocktails
Hennessy V.S is a very popular brand of French Cognac (Cognac is a variety of brandy for a region in France). Hennessy has a sweet, spicy and woody flavour. You could swap Hennessy with whisky, brandy or a different brand of Cognac for this cocktail.
Cointreau is a French orange-flavoured liqueur. Triple Sec or any brand of orange-flavoured liqueur would work in this cocktail.
Egg whites (optional – not pictured above) – Egg whites are purely for the wow factor. It’s the secret and tasteless ingredient used by bartenders to make a foamy layer in cocktails. You’ll get a foamy layer without the egg whites, but it’s not thick and fluffy.

How to make Hennessy Cocktails
Step-by-step guide with photos
In a glass, pour in pineapple juice and place in the lime and raspberry. Use a muddler or the back of a wooden spoon and muddle the ingredients together. Take your time to remove as much juice as possible from the fruits for flavour. Strain the mixture into a cocktail shaker, then use the back of the spoon to press the liquid out gently. Discard the solids or use the leftover raspberry in a fruit smoothie.
Pour in the Hennessy, Cointreau and egg white (if using) into the shaker and shake vigorously for 20 seconds. Place the ice cubes into the shaker and shake for another 30 seconds, then quickly pour the cocktail into a chilled glass. The foam layer should settle on top.
