Bloody Mary Oyster Shots

These deluxe Bloody Mary Oyster Shots are the life of the party. What’s better than having a drink that comes with oysters, bacon, and prawns?

The ONLY way I would drink tomato juice!

I’m going to say straight up that these Bloody Mary Oyster Shots are not for everyone. It’s quite potent and goes straight up into the nose, a bit like the way wasabi does. And just like wasabi, you’re going to either love it or hate it! Having a shot of Bloody Mary will probably shock your senses.

How odd, I’m not a big fan of tomatoes, but I enjoy drinking a Bloody Mary. I don’t hate tomatoes, but I’m very fussy about how I have them. Cherry tomatoes are so cute but don’t offer them to me straight out of the box and expect me to eat them like grapes, GROSS! I have to drench my tomatoes in marinade or dressing before I can enjoy them, just like I did for my Smoked Salmon Bruschetta.

How the hell did I end up liking Bloody Mary if I don’t love tomatoes? Well, I don’t bloody know. Actually, I do, but I wanted to keep typing bloody, as it’s one of my favourite curse words. I’m always going ‘bloody this, bloody that!’ Is bloody even a curse word?

A drink to wake up your senses!

My sister, Nara, introduced me to Bloody Mary. She had a few at a party she attended and she enjoyed them. She convinced me I would love them too by saying, ‘this drink will kick your ass in and wake you up but it’s delicious!’ I also learned that it was savoury and spicy. So tomato juice aside, this was something I had to try.

I admit it took a while for my tastebuds to adjust to this cocktail. It’s because my senses automatically think a cocktail should be sweet or sour, not savoury and spicy. After a few more sips, I was hooked to the usual but delicious drink.

This Bloody Mary has a mix of tomato juice, lime juice, tomato, tabasco and Worcestershire sauce. It’s the perfect combination to serve with oysters, prawns, bacon, olives and pickle. A drink that comes with its own snacks is a big win!

A cure for a massive hangover?

Bloody Mary Oyster Shots

Downing a glass of Bloody Mary to cure a hangover! Is this a myth or is factual? Fun fact, I wouldn’t know because I have never been drunk out of my mind. No, it’s not because I am a ‘goody two-shoes’, it’s because I hate that feeling of losing complete control of my actions.

I have tried to get off my face when the situation was safe before we had our toddler with my then-fiance, Tomasi, and his cousins at our house. That didn’t go to plan! I was overly tired and stressed from work, so drinking a bottle of cheap wine myself probably wasn’t the best idea. I remembered sitting around a table in the middle of our backyard in the middle of the night.

Everyone was chatting away happily. Then, out of nowhere, I heard myself blurt out, ‘See that old exotic tree over there? (In reality, it was just a plain old raggedy tree) I want to sleep under it with the possums and the stars.’

The table went awkwardly quiet, followed by roars of laughter. Tomasi’s cousin joked he would take my spot on the bed next to him. Hubby looked concerned and said, ‘No, you’re not darling, are you okay?’. I excused myself and made my way inside the house. At that stage, everything was spinning, and it felt like our bedroom was so close but yet so far. I literally had to grab onto things around the house to steady myself from falling over, and if I did, I knew there was no way I could get up again. Passing out on my bed never felt so good!

Bloody Mary Oyster Shots

I don’t think I could stomach the smell or taste of alcohol after a big night, so the chances of me sipping on a Bloody Mary the next morning would be slim. My cure for hangovers is greasy food! Hello KFC or McDonalds!

Ingredients for Bloody Mary Oyster Shots

ingredients

Tomato juice – We don’t have many ranges of tomato juice available here, so I wasn’t able to find any fresh tomato juice. If you have a juicer, you could make your own using ripe red tomatoes.

Vodka – Authentic Bloody Mary calls for vodka, but if you like to twist it up a bit, you could replace vodka with tequila, gin or white rum. To make a virgin Bloody Mary, swap the alcohol for more tomato juice.

Worcestershire sauce – Supermarkets usually stock Worcestershire sauce near the condiments or sauce section. I used Holbrooks’ Worcestershire Sauce; it has a strong vinegary, sweet and savoury taste that goes fantastic with meat and seafood.

Tabasco (optional) – If you don’t want a spicy drink, leave out the tabasco. You could use your favourite hot sauce in place of tabasco.

OPTIONAL TOPPING AND GARNISH

Ingredients

Optional toppings – To make fully loaded and deluxe Bloody Mary Oyster shots, you could add skewers of grilled bacon and prawns, olives, pickled baby cucumber, pickled onions and celery sticks.

How to make Bloody Mary Oyster Shots

Step-by-step guide with photos

In a large jug or bowl, pour in the tomato juice. Add in the sugar and stir until dissolved, then pour in the Worcestershire sauce, tabasco, lime and vodka. Give it a stir and have a taste, then add salt and pepper to your liking.

Use 6 shot glasses that can hold over 1/3 cup (80ml – 2.7floz). Pour the cocktail evenly into the glasses. Place one oyster into each glass or leave them in the shell and let your guest drop it in themselves.
