Amaretto Sour Cocktail

Sip on an icy glass of Amaretto Sour at home. An elegant cocktail that’s delightfully sweet, sour & bitter with almond cherry flavour

Annoying flu season

A glass of Amaretto Sour Cocktail should be in my hands, but sadly it isn’t. Instead, my hands are busy reaching for that darn box of tissues in between typing. Yup, cold and flu season is officially here and I’m one of its victims.

To my annoyance, I’m one of those people that catches a cold too easily. I don’t think I’ve ever escaped not catching colds from my family or friends after spending time with them. Tomi, my hubby, is the opposite because rarely catches colds. However, poor Kai, our 3-year-old, seems to take after me.

Yesterday morning, Kai jumped on me, jolting me awake. ‘Mummy, what happened to my mouth?’ He asked, pointing to his mouth and looking concerned. He then opened his mouth as wide as possible so I could look inside it. I knew immediately he caught my cold, and that he was referring to a sore throat, but he didn’t know how to articulate it.

Amaretto Sour Cocktail

Yeah, so needless to say, looking after a sick toddler and my sick self hasn’t been fun. After a challenging week, I feel I deserve a good drink tonight!

This Amaretto Sour Cocktail should do me well because it has fresh lemon juice in it! Once our toddler falls asleep, I’ll be treating myself to one of these. It sure tastes a lot better than Benadryl cough syrup, and with any luck, hopefully, I’ll pass out from the drink!

Amaretto Sour Cocktail

What is an Amaretto Sour?

Amaretto Sour is a classic cocktail with sweet and sour almond flavours. It’s usually served in a short glass with foam on top. The foam is from the egg whites that’s been vigorously shaken with the cocktail. It’s then topped with a glace or fresh cherry on top.

What is an Amaretto?

Amaretto is an Italian sweet liqueur with a cherry and almond flavour. Funny enough, some brands of amaretto don’t contain cherries or almonds. The nutty and fruity flavours may be from peach and apricot pits. I used Galliano’s amaretto, but any brand of amaretto would work.

What is Simple Syrup?

Simple syrup is just a cooled mixture of 1:1 sugar and water. It adds sweetness to drinks and keeps cakes moist.

How to make simple syrup

Combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of white sugar in a saucepan. Give it a stir and place the saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir until the sugar has dissolved and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, then simmer the mixture for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool completely. Transfer the syrup into a sterilised jar and store it in the fridge. It should be good for up to a month.

Egg whites give cocktails a silky and smooth head of foam. Raw egg whites don’t have any flavour, but give cocktails a richer and creamier texture. I skip the egg whites when I’m making cocktails just for us, but would add it in for my guests if they request it.
