How To Make Aperol Spritz

The unique colour, the bittersweet taste and it’s so refreshing, it’s no wonder everyone around the world is addicted to Aperol Spritz.

Easy breezy Aperol Spritz

Aperol Spritz, it’s the cocktail with a distinctly beautiful orange hue. It’s the trendy cocktail served in a large wine glass with a slice of orange that we see preppy people sipping at restaurants and cafes.

The refreshing Aperol Spritz is easy to drink and effortless to make so it’s a perfect choice to celebrate this upcoming New Year celebration. I bet most of us can’t wait to kiss 2020 goodbye!

How To Make Aperol Spritz

As mentioned in my previous post (Mignonette Sauce For Oysters) I am all cooked out after spending endless hours in my kitchen preparing for Christmas. So by the time, New Year arrives I am exhausted and ultra lazy. If I am hosting, I purposely make my NY celebration food and drinks simple and fast BUT without skimping on the taste of course!

Unlike most cocktails, when preparing Aperol Spritz there is no shaking, muddling, or even straining involved! You just pour everything in and stir! It’s so easy that you don’t even need to be sober to make it. I better stop right here or someone may report me for encouraging bad behaviour online!

No, I am not basic!

According to one of my friends, choosing to drink Aperol Spritz means you are ‘BASIC’. For those who are yet to hear the term Basic, it’s a slang used to insult people who are meant to be brainless that follow popular trends.

I do love sipping on Aperol Spritz but I ain’t no basic b****!

In 2012, I travelled to Europe for 6 weeks and had the time of my life! I was single, carefree with no commitments. Each night was a fun party and it was absolutely brilliant!

During our travels in Italy, Spain and Austria I saw so many people in bars, cafes, restaurants EVERYWHERE sipping on Aperol Spritz. I had no idea what it was at the time but I was entranced with its unique colour as I haven’t seen anything like it.

How To Make Aperol Spritz

One night in Vienna I saw more people sipping on this vibrant looking drink. If half of Europe was drinking this thing it must be freaking amazing!

I interrupted a couple of locals who were drinking Aperol with their dinner.

‘Excuse me, can I please ask, what you are drinking?’ I asked politely. ‘Aperol Spritz’ she replied with her lovely accent accompanied with a bemused smile. She must have thought I was a crazy foreigner.

I repeated after her ‘Apeerold Spee?’ and she nodded but by the time I got to the bar (5 seconds later) I forgot what it was called so I pointed to their drink and said I wanted the same.

So Aperol Spritz was part of my life before it was trending here! When I smugly tell my husband that I discovered Aperol Spritz in Europe he calls me obnoxious and pretentious. Not so nice but I’ll take that over basic anytime!

Aperol – Aperol is an aperitif (alcoholic predinner drink) from Italy. It’s made from bitter oranges, rhubarb, herbs and roots. Aperol is sweet with a bitter aftertaste which is comparable to grapefruit.

You can find a bottle of Aperol at the liquor store near on in the liqueurs section.

Prosecco – Prosecco is an Italian sparkling white wine, it’s sweet, crisp with lots of bubbles. Sparkling white wine or champagne can be used as a substitute.

Soda water – Soda water is also known as carbonated water, sparkling water. seltzer water or fizzy water.

Oranges – Slices of orange are used mainly for garnish so there is no need to squeeze or muddle it. This means you can use any variety of orange, I used Valencia oranges.
