Now that Christmas is behind us, it’s all about the drinks! If you’re anything like me, you’re likely exhausted from all the post-Christmas shopping, preparing, cooking, and cleaning. So, as much as I love my kitchen, I need a break from it!
Hopefully, you’re still enjoying your holidays and taking it easy! Tomi, my husband, has time off until the first week of January this year, allowing us to squeeze in a mini road trip this holiday. When considering a rambunctious 3-year-old toddler, road trips are the most fitting type of vacation 😂
For now, let’s direct our attention to the New Year celebrations and whip up some easy yet stylish cocktails! So, allow me to present this gorgeous Mango Lassi Cocktail to you.
If you love ordering a Mango Lassi whenever you’re having Indian food, then this cocktail is for you. I’ve tweaked this popular beverage into grown-up fun by pouring in some white rum and orange liqueur.
With the fragrant mango pulp and the richness of the yoghurt, this cocktail is also for those who adore fruity and creamy drinks. You might also love that the alcohol doesn’t taste too strong here, and it’s very easy to drink. For those who like a good hit, you can double the amount of rum called for in this recipe.
Oh, and don’t worry because I haven’t forgotten you mocktail drinkers! For a classic Mango Lassi, just omit the alcohol.
Mango Lassi Cocktail
I tried recreating Mango Lassi multiple times, but it didn’t turn out as I had hoped. I couldn’t replicate the same aromatic and intense mango taste that Indian restaurants have. Even after experimenting with different fresh and frozen mangoes, I remained unsatisfied with the outcome.
So it was time I dug a little harder and do some good old research!
After exploring some content on Mango Lassi, I finally found what I was searching for. With great interest, I watched an Indian chef preparing a massive amount of Mango Lassi for his restaurant. I couldn’t believe my eyes when he poured canned mango pulp into his lassi instead of using fresh mangoes. Ah, so that’s the secret!
The secret ingredient is canned Alphonso mango!
What are Alphonso mangoes?
Originating from India, Alphonso mangoes are beloved for their rich and aromatic flavour. Their flesh is non-fibrous, sweet, and creamy, with a beautiful, vibrant yellow colour.
What does a tin of Alphonso mango pulp contain?
The label on a tin of Alphonso mango pulp states it contains Alphonso mango, sugar, and citric acid. Canned Alphonso mango is available at Indian grocers, and some supermarkets have them in their international section.

What can I substitute for Alphonso mango pulp?
If you can’t find canned Alphonso, use fresh, canned regular mangoes, or frozen mango pulp instead. While it may not replicate the exact taste of Indian restaurants, it is still very delicious. Don’t forget, you might have to add or tweak the sugar to your liking.

Plain or natural yogurt with no sugar added – The thickness of your Mango Lassi depends on the type of yogurt and milk you use. I like my lassi not too thick, so I used light Natural Greek yogurt with skim milk. For a richer and thicker consistency, use full cream milk (whole milk) with regular yoghurt.
White rum – I used Bacardi, but you can substitute it with other white rum brands like Havana Club and Plantation.
Orange liqueur – I used Cointreau, but you can substitute it with other brands like Triple sec include Vok and Marie Brizard.

How to make Mango Lassi and Mango Lassi Cocktail
Step-by-step guide with photos
Place all the ingredients except for the garnish into a blender, then blitz for 20 seconds or until combined. Have a taste, and add 1 or 2 teaspoons of sugar to your liking if needed. If your Lassi it’s too thick, thin it out with a little more milk. Blend for another 10 seconds, then pour into glasses and serve immediately.
Optional – To make your Mango Lassi extra cold, serve it over ice or add some ice to the Lassi whilst blending. Garnish with a sprinkle of cardamon and saffron chill threads.

- 1½ cup (370gm / 13oz) canned sweetened Alphonso mango pulp (NOTE 1)
- 1½ cup (370gm / 13oz) plain or natural yogurt (light or regular but no-sugar added) (NOTE 2)
- ¾ cup (180ml / 6floz) milk (full cream, light or skim is ok)
- ¼ tsp ground cardamom
- 90ml / 3floz white rum (omit for non-alcoholic) (NOTE 3)
- 30ml / 1floz orange liqueur (omit for non-alcoholic) (NOTE 4)
- sugar (optional, to taste)
Optional – Garnish
- ground cardamom
- saffron chilli threads
