There’ll be many hearts fluttering happily this upcoming Valentine’s Day. This includes florists and jewellers, it’s probably their favourite time of the year as millions of roses and precious gems will be purchased around the world.
Roses and gems are nice BUT there is one problem…….I can’t eat them! Not that I’ll be receiving any of this from my husband Tomasi anyway. He doesn’t believe in Valentine’s as he thinks it’s a big rort and a commercial rip off. He doesn’t feel one should be influenced by others to be romantic on a specific day!
There will be more of Tomasi antics later, right now it’s back to me explaining that I preferred a gift that was edible. Hmmm but on second thoughts, is asking for a valuable and edible gift too much? well, L’Oreal thinks I’m worth it!
On Valentine’s, it’s all about the colour RED so let’s transfer that romantic shade of red into something delicious. Hellooooo Red Velvet waffles!

Are you a romantic at heart? I used to be when I was younger. My romantic heart grew when we were forced to listen to mushy and passionate 1980’s love song melodies each time we rode in dad’s car.
My favourite love song was ‘Glory of Love’ by Peter Cetera. I was only 8 at the time but I knew I was going to have my first wedding dance to my future husband with this song playing loudly.
Come on who can resist romantic lyrics like this?

See no one can! except for my own husband. When I requested this song for our first dance at our wedding he literally laughed at my face. He thought I was joking and when I said I wasn’t he told me it was the theme song for the Karate Kid movie and continued to laugh at me.
I didn’t know who to be madder with, Tomasi for thinking I was ridiculous or the Karate Kid for stealing my love song!
Sadly, we didn’t end up playing Glory of love for our wedding dance and that’s when I questioned if romance was real.
Tomasi reads my posts and he feels I portray him as ‘jerk-like’, but he knows it all light-hearted and I’m naturally silly by nature. So this little story is for you my dear husband of almost 6 years!
When Tomasi first moved in with me he treated me with breakfast in bed for my birthday and made me red velvet pancakes. He handed me a plate with ‘pink’ pancakes that were ‘charred’ nicely. The pancakes definitely weren’t perfect but they were to me, as it makes me smile (laugh) each time I think about it.
What does Red Velvet taste like?
Red Velvet cake, sounds lush, doesn’t it? but what is it and what does it taste like?
I might get into trouble in saying this but I need to be honest. Red velvet cakes don’t have a distinct taste. It’s delicious, slightly dense and moist but if I were to close my eyes and ate red velvet I don’t think I’ll be able to identify it unless it had cream cheese icing.
So, I feel that red velvet is more of a visual treat rather than a flavour bomb. I know I’m not selling this recipe well at all, it’s because I want to be honest with my readers. The last thing I want is for you to make this only to be disappointed that it just taste just like ordinary waffles.
Red velvet cakes usually have buttermilk, vinegar and cocoa powder. It’s definitely not a chocolate tasting cake as the cocoa powder used is minimal.
These waffles look stunning, it’s delicious, crispy, fluffy and not too sweet BUT, sorry there’s no intense ‘red velvet’ flavour.
Ingredients for Red Velvet Waffles
Plain flour is also known as ‘all-purpose’ flour, it has no leavening agents added.
Red food colouring – Each brand of food colouring has a different consistency and intensity in their colours. My cheap liquid food colouring did a good job, I needed to mix 2 teaspoons into my batter for vibrant red colour. Gels and paste food colouring can be used but you’ll have to adjust the amounts needed accordingly.
Eggs – We’ll be separating the egg and whip up the whites. Then we’ll carefully fold it into the batter. This will result in lighter and fluffier waffles.
Milk – As we are using melted butter, the milk needs to be warm so it doesn’t solidify the butter. I warm my milk in a tall microwave-safe jug and zap it in the microwave for 60 seconds and stir it.
Waffle topping suggestions
Seasonal berries is a must as it looks beautiful with any other topping you pair it with. It also adds a burst of freshness and tartness which will enhance this overall flavour of the waffle.
Icing sugar – Berries and a dusting of icing sugar (confectionary sugar) is super quick and easy topping option. It looks great and it adds a nice touch of sweetness to the waffles.
Maple syrup – Why not grab some maple syrup and load it onto your waffles? If possible get pure maple syrup from Canada as it’s the best kind!
Melted chocolate – For pure indulgence, melt chocolate and pour it over the waffles.
Cream cheese icing is what makes Red Velvet cakes so delicious. I prefer cream cheese icing over buttercream icing as it’s not as rich. You can get my cream cheese icing recipe in my GINGER BANANA BREAD post.
How to make Red Velvet waffles
Step by step guide with photos
Preheat the waffle iron to 190°C (374°F). In a large bowl whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt. In another bowl whisk together butter, milk, egg yolk and vanilla. Create a well in the centre of the flour mixture and pour in the wet ingredients, mix to combine.
Mix in a teaspoon of red colouring into the batter, repeat until the batter has a nice shade of red.
Using a stand or hand mixer on high speed, beat the egg white until stiff peaks form. Using a spatula add and fold in half of the egg white into the batter, repeat with the remaining egg white. Do not over mix the batter as it should look ‘airy’ and not flat after folding the egg white in.
Lightly brush the waffle plates with melted butter, scoop 1/4 cup of batter into each section and cook for 6 to 7 minutes.
The waffles are best served immediately to enjoy the crispy outer texture and a soft fluffy centre. For other romantic recipes check out:

- ¼ cup sugar
