Meet the ‘no fuss’ fried chicken
Instant fried chicken YES PLEASE! Not all of us have the time to marinate raw chicken overnight and then flour, batter or bread it to fry the next day. I am exhausted just thinking about the whole process, but I am a real sucker for fried chicken so I’ll do it!
BUT... if my craving for fried chicken hits hard there is no way I can wait that long to get my fix so you’ll probably catch me at KFC. BUT, BUT... if I had chicken wings at home, I’ll satisfy my cravings my with fried crispy hot wings.
These wings take less than 15 minutes to prep and cook so you’ll get scrumptious fried chicken in an instant. Who can say no to cheap, fast and convenient fried crispy hot wings that stay crispy even when cold?
Our love for fried chicken has no boundaries
Isn’t it amazing that countries have their own version of fried chicken? It’s brilliant but at the same time, it’s torture as I want to try them all!
There is one person that loves fried chicken more than I do and that’s Tomasi. This is embarrassing to say but we have tried KFC in every country we have visited thanks to him. My husband is on a mission to find the best tasting KFC in the world, that’s so ambitious of him!
So, our love for fried chicken has resulted in me slaving in the kitchen for hours as I have made Southern, Nashville, Korean and KFC copycat recipes. At the time I didn’t mind but as long as the payoff resulted in succulent flavourful chicken. And if it’s a flop I feel like violently kicking over a bucket of KFC in anger but only after I have eaten the contents.
Mum’s 4 ingredients salted fried chicken
FLASHBACK TIME – My parents worked in a factory that demanded long hours but on a minimum wage. They would come home exhausted but incredibly my mum always managed to cook for us and never resorted to store-bought food. She had 7 hungry mouths to feed daily and was fantastic at making fast simple meals that were filling and tasty.
Our family loved it every time mum made us her most simple fried chicken wings ever and all she did was rub the chicken in salt and dusted it with cornflour to fry. This may sound bland and tasteless but it wasn’t. The wings were nicely seasoned and the cornflour provided a non-greasy crunch to the wings that last for ages.
So there you go, it was my mum that inspired me to make this recipe.

6 Ingredients for fried crispy hot wings
This is my version of quick-fried chicken wings and as you can see it only has two more ingredients. That is Cayenne pepper and garlic powder and yes it’s still that simple!
I didn’t want to overcomplicate the simplicity of her recipe as she already had a perfect base. I just added flavours that I enjoyed having on chicken and that’s garlic and chilli but in an easy and no fuss powdered form.
So, let’s have a look closer at some of the ingredients for the fried hot crispy wings:
Cornflour (can be substituted with cornstarch) is used to lightly coat the wings and give it a nice crisp without absorbing too much oil.
Cayenne pepper provides both heat and flavour.
Garlic powder provides more depth to the overall flavour of the fried chicken wings.
Oil, I used vegetable oil but this can be substituted with a flavourless oil with a high smoke point like peanut, canola and rice bran oil.
How to make fried crispy hot wings
Step-by-step guide with photos
Fried crispy hot wings don’t get easier than this, just follow these basic steps:
1. Throw in the seasoning ingredients on to the chicken wings.
2. Rub rub rub! the seasoning on to the wings and marinate for 1 to 2 hours or even better overnight!
3. Place the wings in a snap bag and add in cornflour and shake shake shake!
4. Deep fry for 8 to 10 minutes until the chicken is golden and cooked through.
Marinating – My mum never had time to marinate her salted chicken wings but they still turned out flavoursome. The same applies to my recipe, the wings can be cooked immediately without the marinating time for instant delicious fried chicken.
But if you have time to marinate the wings for 1 or 2 hours or even overnight it will be well worth it because like most foods, it tastes better when marinated.
This recipe serves 4 people as an entree/ appetizer but can also be served as a main with sides.
Any leftovers wings can be fridged in a sealed container and will keep for 4 days. The wings also freeze well and will keep for up to 2 months.
These fried crispy hot wings are even more delicious when dipped in my Wasabi pickle mayo. I recommend you give it a try as it’s just as quick and simple make!

Fried crispy hot wings
Ingredients
- 1 kg chicken wings
- ¼ cup cornflour (or cornstarch)
- oil for deep frying (NOTE 1)
SEASONING
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 tsp ground cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp salt
Instructions
- Place the chicken wings into a large bowl and add in the seasoning ingredients. Using hands rub the seasoning on the wings making sure all wings are covered. If marinating, cover the bowl with cling wrap and place the wings in the fridge for 2 hours or overnight (NOTE 2)
- In a large snap bag place half of the wings and half of the cornflour inside. Leave as much air as possible inside the bag before sealing it shut and shake the wings to coat it in flour evenly. Repeat with the remaining wings and flour.
- Heat oil to 180°C (356°F) and carefully lower the wings into the oil in small batches making sure the wings are not touching each other, fry for 8 to 10 minutes until golden and cooked through.
I made these wings last night, it was awesome. I shallow fried them tho instead of deep frying, they turned out nice and crunchy. Thanks for this recipe it’s a gem 🙂
