My 2-year-old toddler still loves this Pasta!

This tasty pasta for babies isn’t just for babies because older children will love this too. Actually, the adults in our household would happily eat this as well!

I created this pasta dish for Kai when he was 8 months old. It was a great way to ease him into eating solid food with texture. However, when I first fed him this dish, I placed his pasta and veggies into a food processor after I cooked it. This was probably unnecessary, but I had to eliminate my fear that he would choke.

Yes, that’s the helicopter mum in me, and Tomi, my husband, likes to call me one. But he shouldn’t talk because he is worse than me! Any scratches or brushes found on Kai’s body would freak the daylights out of him. ‘Catte, have you seen this massive scratch on baby’s leg?’ His voice filled with anguish. My heart would start racing, only to discover it was just a light scratch.

Pasta for Babies

Babies and toddlers may change every day or week. They could love something one day and hate it the next. That’s Kai’s relationship with yogurt at the moment. On a good day, he would gulp it down, but on a bad day, he or I would wear it on our clothes.

This is why I’m so grateful for this pasta for babies. Kai loved it when he was a baby and he’s still eating it as a toddler. Our little one knows how to feed himself with a spoon, but he never wants to because doesn’t like his hands being unavailable. He rather tinker with the nearest thing next to him whilst we feed him. However, if this pasta was in front of him, he would feed himself!

Parents would be happy to know that this meal ticks most of the boxes. Budget friendly, quick and easy to whip up and it stores really well. I always make a big batch and store it in the freezer for a quick meal for Kai.

The logic of a 2-year-old

Not a day goes by that Kai spills out something random, causing me to crack up in fits of laughter. Here are some memorable and amusing things Kai recently said.

We were having breakfast together when our kitty, Caviar, joined us at the table. Everything was peaceful until Kai screamed out at the top of his lungs ‘CAT EATING CAT‘ I looked over at Caviar, who was going hard nibbling himself between his paws. Most us of know this as grooming.

I usually have my hair up, and Kai has seen me like this since he was born. So he hates it when I wear my hair down and he would say ‘MUMMY HAIR MESSY, MUMMY CLEAN UP HAIR’. Oh, how adorable right?! Yes, it is, but only on the first few times because now my 2-year-old toddler controls how I do my hair. One time I left my hair down and ignored his pleas and it ended up in a full tantrum with real tears.

When Kai was younger, he would rip the pages of his books out. I would say, ‘Don’t tear your book up! Give it to daddy and he’ll fix it.’ So, now he has it in his head that whatever he breaks it fixable. Like plates, cups and other things, his broken that’s not repairable he would go up to his dad and order him to ‘DADDY FIX IT!’.

Kai loved my singing voice and would listen to it with so much love in his eyes. Then it stopped because one day I was singing to him after his nap when he rudely said to me, ‘Mummy, turn it off!

Ingredients for Pasta for Babies with Veggies

Pasta – I used gluten-free elbow pasta, however, any type of small pasta would work such as macaroni. To make this meal even healthier, you could use macaroni pasta made from wholemeal (wholewheat) or spelt.

Potatoes – Choose potatoes that are good for boiling, such as all-rounders. I cleaned the potatoes and chopped them, but you could peel them first if you wish.

Chicken stock (or vegetable stock for vegan) – To keep the sodium levels low, I used salt-reduced (low sodium) stock.

Frozen vegetables – My toddler tolerates sweet baby corn and peas, which we get premixed and frozen from the supermarket. You may wish to substitute for veggies that your little one would likely eat.

How to make Pasta for Babies with Veggies

Step-by-step guide with photos

Peel (optional) and chop up the potatoes into small cubes. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, then add in the garlic and potatoes and cook for 2 minutes, stirring regularly. Pour in the chicken or vegetable stock and stir in the tomato paste, then bring the mixture to a boil.

Once the mixture bubbles, reduce the heat to medium-low, then add the pasta and cover for 5 minutes. Add in the peas and corn and cook for a further 2 minutes uncovered, stirring occasionally or until the pasta and potatoes are soft. Leave the pasta to cool at room temperature (or lukewarm) before feeding your little one.

Leftovers – Allow the pasta to cool completely at room temperature, then transfer into an airtight container and refrigerate. It’ll be good for up to 3 days. Freeze batches of pasta in little/baby containers for up to 3 months.
