This handy chart shows Australian, US and UK cooking measurements in cups, spoons and oven temperature
When cooking recipes from the US or UK, I use their cup and spoon measurements because I’ve purchased them on Amazon or eBay. Yes, I own lots of cheap measuring cups and spoons!
In saying that, it’s said that the variance in spoon and cup measurements shouldn’t affect the end results too greatly. UNLESS you’re baking or following an intricate recipe such as making candies. For those recipes, it’s best to weigh the ingredients for the best results.
What are Australian cup measurements?
Here are the Australian, US and UK cup measurements:
CUP | AUSTRALIAN | US (approx.) | UK (approx.) |
1 CUP | 250 ml / 8.5 fl oz | 240 ml/ 8 fl oz | 250 ml / 8.5 fl oz |
1/2 CUP | 125 ml / 4 fl oz | 120 ml/ 4 fl oz | 125 ml / 4 fl oz |
1/3 CUP | 80 ml / 2.7 fl oz | 80 ml / 2.7 fl oz | 75 ml / 2.5 fl oz |
1/4 CUP | 60 ml / 2 fl oz | 60 ml / 2 fl oz | 60 ml / 2 fl oz |
What are Australian spoon measurements?
Here are the Australian, US and UK spoon measurements:

1 TBSP | 20 ml | 15 ml | 18 ml |

1/2 TSP | 2.5 ml | 2.5 ml | 3 ml |
1/4 TSP | 1.25ml | 1.25 ml | 1.5 ml |
Oven temperatures
As a general rule, when using a fan-forced oven, we should reduce the temperature by 20ºC (70ºF) unless the recipe states otherwise.
Celsius | Fahrenheit |
120º | 250º |
150º | 300º |
160º | 325º |
180º | 350º |
190º | 375º |
200º | 400º |
230º | 450º |
250º | 500º |
Although the equivalents here are broadly correct, UK recipes have measured by weight rather than volume for a very long time, and you won’t find many references to ‘cups’ or even ‘teaspoons’ in them. Recipes published before the mid 1970s will almost always use Imperial measures (pounds, ounces, pints) and later ones wil use metric (grams, millilitres).
Hi Paul,
Thanks for taking the time to share this information.
Measuring by weight is more accurate and makes sense for recipes to be universal. I’ve mainly used cups and spoons for simplicity, and it’s how we often measure our ingredients here.
